Motivation Vs. Inspiration

Motivation is needed when you're not aligned with your highest values, and it's not always positive. It acts as a push. Inspiration, on the other hand, is the pull.

Though the difference might seem subtle, motivation and inspiration are worlds apart.

When I attempt to motivate myself, I often find myself pushing to do something that doesn’t genuinely interest me.

Motivation involves psyching yourself up—chest-pounding, fire-walking, or heavy-metal riffs. It’s about pushing yourself to do things you feel you should do.

Inspiration comes from a different place entirely. The term "inspiration" means to be in spirit. When you’re in tune with your spirit, you’re naturally drawn to what feels right. You might engage in activities that aren’t overtly productive or you might complete a major project in a short time. Either way, the outcome is fulfillment.

Motivation is about doing what you think you should do, often without considering why. It tends to lead you toward things that don’t truly matter to you—what you’re “supposed” to do rather than what you’re deeply passionate about.

Inspiration, however, is about responding to a calling.

You know you're inspired when:

- Life feels effortless.

- You’re eager to start immediately.

- Your passion remains steady and doesn’t wane.

- It occupies your mind completely; there's no space for anything else.

- You feel a deep, core-driven calling to act.

You might wonder, "How do I get inspired?" The truth is, you can’t. Inspiration doesn’t come from external sources; it originates from within. Being inspired isn’t about seeking something external to bring it in. That’s motivation.

Being inspired involves a constant process of realignment. If you find yourself pushing too hard, not enjoying life, or merely fulfilling expectations, it’s time to realign.

Realignment is straightforward: it’s about turning inward and discovering what you truly want.

So, what do you really want? Not what you think you should want or what might be a good idea. What truly excites you? Once you identify that, immerse yourself in it. Savor it, feel it, and let it resonate deeply within you.

If it doesn’t feel right, keep searching.

When you reach a state of anticipation and genuine excitement, you’re inspired. You’re in spirit. And that’s far better than merely trying to motivate yourself.
